number of federal agencies and local agencies, fire department, and ambulances outside, in fact, sitting oh, maybe 20 yards from one right now. i'm watching a bomb technician walk out with a flak jacket and helmet on and the hook and ladder truck has gone back down. looks like they're trying to get somebody inside to get a look at this more than just through the window and may try to enter the facility. and that's been the goal all along because the idea, if this was to go perfectly they'd set off the little devices and set off two so far i've heard, devices of their own little pop caps or whatever they're using to try and diffuse whatever is in the apartment. the perfect scenario for the authorities would be to do that to defuse the first couple of and get inside with the robots and defuse the rest of the apartment and be able to secure the rest the apartments so people could return home and resume their
1:01 pm
lives, but more importantly for authorities, to secure the evidence inside holmes' apartment and you can bet there's going be to be a plethora of evidence inside of that apartment here in aurora, colorado. it looks like jonathan, from your-- from our vantage point they're going to try to have a couple of bomb technicians walking in through the parking lot entrance and the most we've seen since this operation began about an hour ago, jon? >> all right, incredible work there, adam. thank you very much. let's talk about the delicate task that lies ahead. former new york police captain, peter moreno is now director of operations for broadening risk consultants and he knows a thing or two about disarming bombs scenes like this one. and captain, they have been treating this so gingerly and obviously, we can understand why. tell us a little about those explosive charges that we just heard. what were they likely doing inside of that apartment? >> what you're watching is a
1:02 pm
precise surgical operation designed to minimize the damage to the crime scene and to increase the safety of the officers on the scene. the small detonation devices are designed to focus energy towards another device and try to minimize the damage. it's important to remember, that a lot has been said about the crime scene. police understand that the immediate safety is obviously paramount concern, but also, the ongoing investigation includes securing whatever evidence might be in that apartment to protect people in the future from he whatever devices may be stored at other locations perhaps or evidence how he acquired this explosive device. >> yeah, this kind of situation, i mean, trip wires and bottles filled with liquid, where does one get that kind of information? is that all out there on the internet for would-be bombers? >> well unfortunately it is.
1:03 pm
i'm sure you're familiar with anarchists cookbook and information available via clan destine websites, there may be chemicals inside the department, if exploded could be a greater risk to the community. this is a precise surgical operation has to be undergone with the utmost of care. >> adam housley is telling us that it appears that the bomb technicians are about to actually go into the unit. apparently, they feel confident that whatever they have done with those first trip wires, however the system was designed to be set off, the apparently they feel they ha have, well, disarmed the first ones and they can at least maybe take a step inside the front door. would you guess that's what the plan is? >> i'm sure that they would prefer to get inside and remove whatever devices they may find to remote locations, usually in a small armored vehicle and prefer to detonate
1:04 pm
them under controlled circumstances at a remote location and i imagine that's what they're going to try and do right now. >> and these kinds of devices described as bottles filled with liquid, are they the kind of, you know, high explosives that you see dynamite being, you know, a good example or are they just designed to be fire balls? >> it's impossible for me to tell or anyone to tell until they get inside. the speculation, you have to err on the side of caution and assume they're highly volatile before any examination can take place. >> and i guess, one of the things that has be to be going through any bomb technician's mind is, you know, is this something i haven't seen before? is there a, you know, a back door that would trigger this device? is there something i might touch that sets this thing off? >> absolutely, and the front door-- obviously, mr. holmes is a very intelligent individual and he knew that police were
1:05 pm
likely to thwart some of his attendants here, quite certain that he had several backup plans and methods to achieve his results. >> so, authorities have waited this long, some 36 hours after they have found these things to start disarming them. obviously, the time has been well spent in treating these bombs or whatever they are with an abundance of caution. >> that's the preferred method. buy as much time as you can, once the neighborhood has been secured and everyone is evaluated. now you have the luxury of time. >> what will they do with this stuff, you know, once they get in there? are they going to bring it all out and you know, put it in evidence room or preferred method to put it in a pit and blow it up? >> well, first of all, any dangerous substances will be removed. in new york city we would remove it to the range where the bomb squad has a pit, as
1:06 pm
you say, to explode them, but everything has to be cataloged and recorded, if safety permi permits. >> all right. peter moreno is a former new york city captain and explosives expert with the new york city. >> thank you. >> you're quite welcome. >> one of biggest concerns for investigators in colorado to find a safe way to get inside the booby trapped apartment. we're told that bomb detectives have successfully disarmed the trip wires and they're go to get into that apartment, but their investigation is not over. mike tobin is live with the very latest, mike? >> and jon, a lot of what the police are going to be able to look at is the purchasing, the physical planning that this guy went through at least two months ahead of the attack. and he got on the internet, in a massive arsenal. 3000, 223 bullets that he was
1:07 pm
carrying, another caliber bullet that would correspond with the the two glock side arms that they had. one was on his possession at the time and one the police chief believes he said was inside the vehicle out in the parking lot and also purchased on the internet. some300 .12 gain shotguns. all were bought legally and locally and all the background checks would have turned up as a simple speeding ticket, nothing to cause a red flag and police are also going to want to look into investigation of the purchases of the body armor. he had more body armor than soldiers wear into combat, a tactical helmet, a throat protector, a chest protecting vest and groin detector and protects the femoral arteries, it doesn't seem significant, but someone can bleed out in the femoral arteries. and he was geared up for a gun
1:08 pm
battle. what makes it strange, after he was approached by police minute of the attack, he gave up without a fight. and people looking into the background, said he was quiet, doesn't necessarily get along with people, but nothing to indicate that he would execute a horrific attack. he did spend a lot of time on the internet and engaged in fantasy type video games and role playing video games. you get back to the point there's nothing at that people have said so far that would indicate he was capable of this kind of carnage, jon. >> yeah, there have been situations in the past where people say, oh, you should have caught this out of his background, you should have seen this, you know, statement, these, you know, suspicious activities, but so far with this particular suspect, nothing in a background check that would have revealed anything like this might have been in his future. >> and then, i think things can really change. you're talking about the entry into this apartment right now. ground zero in terms of
1:09 pm
evidence will probably be in there. we've heard talk about a computer, we haven't seen any evidence that there's a computer, but you have to assume that someone who is a medical student studying neuro science probably spent a lot of time on the computer and heard from his background, playing fantasy games on his computer and assume that there probably is a computer in the apartment and can yield a lot of evidence and you're going to have purchasing receipts probably in that apartment and that's just one of the reasons that police are going into the place where he lives, they're being extra careful and they don't want destruction of property and certainly don't want to hurt people, but preserve as much evidence as they can in this process, jon. >> and mike, as you pointed out, somebody who is a neurobiology student is accustomed of spending long hours at the computer looking into the most minute details and there could be an awful lot of information that that thing. certainly can be, jon. >> yeah. well, we understand, too, that there are now bomb squad

members who are actually inside that apartment. apparently, it's not clear to me whether they went in through that broken window that we've been watching for so long there, or whether they actually went in through that front door. but there are bomb squad members now physically inside the apartment that was apparently so wired with potential explosives, trip wires, and the like. and designed, police say, to kill whoever the first one was through the door. well, before he allegedly shot some 71 people killing 12 of them inside the theater behind me, and classmates say that james holmes was quote, a the sweet and easy going guy. did the former grad student turn into a cold blooded killer? and how did that happen? we'll talk with a clinical psychiatrist next, and plus, hair owing moments from inside the theater. we will hear from several eyewitnesses, describing the terror and fear that erupted just moments after the gunman

1:19 pm
the like. authorities say it is a very serious situation that the team is dealing with there. you can see them trying to yank out the window frame finally succeeding there. authorities apparently are going in through the window. we were told that they actually have officers who did get inside the apartment, but whether that meant through the front door or through the window, we don't yet know. they did apparently succeed in-- all right, yeah, he's extending the boom now on that device and maybe it has a camera on the end. maybe they are, you know, getting a deeper look inside the apartment because that thing apparently has quite a reach on it that you can see, but that bomb squad member taking another look inside the apartment of the suspect, james holmes. the 24-year-old man thought to have caused so much carnage at the century 16 movie theater here in aurora, colorado, again, they're looking at his

third floor apartment about four miles away from the theater. adam housley has a new vantage point on what officers are doing. adam, what can you tell us? >> yeah, jon, i'm going to step away and we moved our vantage point to the west. you can see there's a hook and ladder truck. i'm talking with jessica rosenthal, fox news radio, next to me, said that the aurora police department tweeted for media and people in the area get behind their cars and far enough away and we're at vantage point where the sergeant says we're okay location to be for what is going be to be a controlled detonation. we've heard two so far. the last one i heard was about 35 minutes ago, they were very small. i can tell you now there are four different personnel inside the building. we saw the first two guys go in about, oh, ten minutes ago and then they repositioned the hook and ladder truck in order to get a better vantage point themselves and they brought in two more. it looks like another firefighter and another bomb technician, of course we don't
1:21 pm
know for sure because they're not wearing any markings, just protective equipment as they went in. we now know there are four personnel eitr outside of the apartment or inside the apartment and moving around delicately to try to diffuse the situation. and we know the first device were successful inside the apartment, set up to quote, kill whoever opened the door. so that first one has been elimb nated. there are many more, they just tweeted for everyone in the area to take cover or make sure you're far enough away and the first location, the target says we're extremely safe and we are by them as well. as you see, a number of people inside, they have definitely found at least an entry point, but seems like, jon, they're beginning to use their own little explosive devices to try to defuse the situation inside that leads me to believe, when we talk to the people that specialize in this i think thing this is
1:22 pm
literally a spider web of stuff and we've been told that from the beginning, when at the looked in the window, trip wires and wires connecting bottles and balloons with powder and gun shells and schrapnel, things that could be used as schrapnel if there were an explosion. and an atc agent has walked to the back of the hook and ladder truck. we know atf is here and closely involved as well as fbi and a number of federal and local agencies. jon, i think the headline this hour we're expecting another explosion of some sort. the first two were small, no smoke so far, no flames so far, no fire so far. those are positive signs. they're trying to preserve the building and surrounding apartments, and what may be inside the apartment of james holmes. jon. >> jon: adam, housley, thank you. as they continue to comb

that door and again, i'm glad that the scenario happened the way it did at that apartment complex because if the police did show up and did knock on the door and they did open the door, who knows what happens. so-- >> and how did you find out, kaitlin, what had happened at the movie theater? >> we found out what happened in the movie theater after we were evacuated and on our way to where we were going to be staying, just by looking on our phones, at news posts and that's when we kind of put two and two together because we'd seen the bomb truck and the robots before we were evacuated completely. >> jon: i know and forgive me for interrupting for a second. my producers in new york were speaking to me with something they wanted to go to and i didn't catch it, maybe they could repeat that, but in the meantime, after the music shut off how long was it blaring and what happened? you just went to bed and awakened by the squad officer? >> well, what happened the music started at exactly midnight and for some reason, you know, that stuck in my

mind this is weird the music starts at midnight and kept playing until exactly at one in the the morning. so right at 1 a.m. it turned off and after it turned off, we decided you know, okay, whatever's going on upstairs, a party, it's over, let's go to bed. and then about an hour later, kaitlin hears the door in the back being broken down and hears a loud bang and then we hear a knock at the door and she looks out and there's s.w.a.t. officers telling us to evacuate and get out and we weren't able to take anything, it just happened so quick, we had about two minutes to get out whatever we could and get owed of the building. >> again, you're continuing to see officers. you can see these pictures, that's what's going on, one floor above the place where you used to live. you can see the officers there reaching inside and what used to-- well, i guess it's still general motors holmes' apartment and they're slowly tearing out the vertical blinds and things like that, getting rid of the screen and

the window flames, making entry and trying to disarm that apparently potentially deadly mess that he left, that you almost walked into. >> yes, and you know, seeing the pictures is a little surreal and seeing my plants in the windows and just everything and you know, we're not that worried about our stuff. we try not to worry about, we want to worry about people being safe, but it's still, it's just a little bit of a toll on you. >> jon: well, you're safe apparently because you listened to that inner voice that said don't push the door open. >> yes, i'm so thankful for that. >> jon: we all are, and we don't need more victims in this tragedy. >> no, we do not. >> jon: kaitlin fonzy and chris rodriguez, thank you both. we're going to continue to watch the situation four miles from where we're standing right now where bomb technicians are very gingerly opening the apartment james holmes, they spent 36 hours trying to defuse some of the
